The Deity of Jesus Christ The Deity of Jesus Christ is the most debated doctrine concerning Jesus’ identity. Who was Jesus Christ? Is Jesus Christ God? The main focus of this information will be demonstrating Biblically that Jesus Christ is God. (John 8:24 NASB) The Deity of Jesus Christ & Misunderstandings Some people misunderstand the doctrine of Jesus Christ being by nature God. Some people say: “Your doctrine is of the devil and is confusing…Jesus is not God because the Father alone is God…Jesus cannot be God because Jesus is the Son of God.” Those who say the doctrine of Jesus Christ being God is of the devil have not come to understand what the Scriptures teach in context and they have been blinded by the ways of the world. (Colossians 2:1-9) For those who have not come to know Jesus Christ personally and do not have the Holy Spirit to give them spiritual understanding state this doctrine is confusing, and honestly without the Holy Spirit this doctrine is confusing. (1 Corinthians 2:14-16) Those who say Jesus is not God because the Father alone is God misunderstand what Christians believe concerning the nature of Jesus. Jesus Christ is a distinct personage from the Father, He came to reveal the heart of the Father, and is by nature and identity God from eternity. (John 1:1-18 & Philippians 2:5-11) Jesus Christ is the Son of God but that does not mean that He is not by nature and identity God. The title, “the Son of God”, in regards to Jesus Christ refers to His equality with God (the Father), which is a way of expressing His Deity in the flesh. (John 5:18-23) Jesus being the Son of God shows He is a distinct personage from the Father and at the same time by identity God in the flesh. Jesus is also called the “Son of Man” which identifies Him as both Messiah and Lord (Matthew 12:8), yet no one will say that Jesus was not man in the flesh, in the likeness of mankind. What does the Bible teach about the Deity of Jesus Christ? The Bible teaches that there is one God to be served and all other so called gods are not genuine or true. (Isaiah 43:10, Galatians 4:8) The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh sent from the Father to redeem mankind from their sins. (John 1:1 & 14, John 3:16, Matthew 1:21-23) Those who say the Bible does not teach the Deity of Jesus Christ have come to wrong conclusions, thus misunderstanding the context and overall emphasis of who God is. What do other Religious Groups believe about the Deity of Jesus Christ? Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the Deity of Jesus Christ by teaching that He is the first of God’s creation, also called Michael the archangel. Jehovah’s Witnesses have been deceived with another Jesus through the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society’s false teachings. Mormons don’t believe in only one God, but in many Gods, and they believe Jesus became a God thus rejecting His eternal Deity. There are many sincere Mormons who believe in Jesus but they do not have the Jesus of the Bible. Islam rejects the Deity of Jesus Christ and Him being the Son of God. Muslims do believe in Jesus as being a prophet of God but they have a wrong Biblical view of who He is and what He came to do. The dividing line of any religious group is on the Deity of Jesus Christ. There were many who opposed the true identity of Jesus Christ among the early Church and there have been many throughout history. (Matthew 7:15 & 21-23, Acts 20:23-31, 2 Corinthians 11:4 & 13-15, Colossians 2:1-9, 1 Timothy 4:1-3, 2 Timothy 4:2-5) Knowing the Jesus of the Bible The Bible teaches eternity is at stake with or without knowing Jesus personally. If you do not know the Jesus of the Bible you are not saved, but there is hope. God's desire is for anyone to be saved and come to know Jesus Christ personally. (2 Peter 3:9) Scriptures on knowing Jesus Christ personally are: Matthew 5:1-7:29, Matthew 10:22-32, Matthew 16:24-26, John 1:1-18, John 3:14-18, John 5:24, John 8:24, John 14:1-6, John 16:7-15, John 20:24-31, Romans 1:16-17, Romans 3:21-31, Romans 4:1-6, Romans 5:1-10, Romans 10:9-13, 1 John 1:1-10, 1 John 5:10-13 & 20. If you have any questions on what the Bible teaches about the Deity of Jesus Christ and how to receive Him please let us know. May God bless you and guide you. (Colossians 2:1-9 NASB)
