Witnessing To Mormons - How To Witness To Mormons

When witnessing to Mormons you must know what Mormons believe and be grounded in the Word of God.  Many Christians today think that Mormons are just another Christian denomination, but they are not another Christian denomination.  Today, many Christians are not prepared to have spiritual dialogues with Mormons because they have not been given instructions on how to witness to them.  The question is asked, "How do I witness to Mormons?"  The purpose of this information is to help give solid answers and guidelines that will help equip Christians in sharing the faith.

How to Witness to Mormons

  1. Make sure you are grounded in the Word of God

  2. Make sure you know what Mormons believe

  3. Make sure that you are praying for them

  4. Make sure you are seeking guidance from the Lord

  5. Make sure you are showing genuine love

How to witness to Mormons takes prayer, time, studying the Bible, studying what Mormons believe, and having lots of love and patience when you witness to them.  Mormons use many of the same words or expressions that Christians use, but the definitions of what Mormons mean are different than what a Christian believes.

Topics for Witnessing to Mormons

  1. Mormons are taught that God the Father was once a man, who after being a man and obeying the Laws became a God just like his father.  Mormons are taught that God the Father had a father, his father had a father, etc, an endless progression of men becoming Gods.  When discussing this topic it is important to show that the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrines & Covenants teaches that God has always been God.  It is important to show that the Mormon Church has been mislead and that this teaching is un-Biblical.

  2. Mormons are taught that Jesus is the first spirit child of God the Father and a heavenly mother through physical union.  Mormons are taught that Jesus is a spirit brother of Lucifer.  Mormons are taught that Jesus became a God by obedience to the Laws just like His Father.  Mormons are taught that Jesus came to give His life for the whole world, however Jesus' death was only to give all people the possible entrance into the spiritual worlds.  Jesus' shed blood and death did not atone for all people's sins, but certain sins the blood of Jesus Christ does not forgive.  When discussing these issues it is important to show what the Bible teaches in context and truth.

  3. Mormons are taught that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and was ordained by God to restore the true Church back on the earth.  Mormons are taught that Joseph Smith testimony is the foundation for the Mormon Church.  Witnessing to Mormons on the topic of Joseph Smith testimony is very important.  Joseph Smith testimony is the foundation for the Mormon Church, and if you are able to share with Mormons the truth concerning who Joseph Smith is, then you will be able to plant some good seeds.

There are many more possible topics but these are the main issues concerning salvation and eternal life.  Topics on the Book of Mormon, Doctrines & Covenants, Pearl of the Great Price, priesthood issues, Brigham Young, polygamy, only one true Church, etc, are good and have their place.  When talking to Mormons the important questions to ask are:  "Do you know the God of the Bible?  Do you know the Jesus of the Bible?  Do you know you have eternal life and that all your sins are forgiven through the shed blood of Jesus?"  If you have the wrong God, Jesus, and Gospel message, than you are lost for all eternity.

When witnessing to Mormons on these types of topics it is very important you know what you believe as a Christian and what Mormons believe.  One of the most important things to do when witnessing to Mormons is ask them questions to make sure you know what they believe.  The reason this is important is because not all Mormons know the same information, and if you say, "I know you believe ...", than you will be insulting them and could possibly lose the opportunity to have further dialogues.

When witnessing to Mormons a common objection arises from Mormons.  Some Mormons say, "Well he may teach that but that is not in the Standard Works.  Only in the Standard Works can we go by for doctrine."  Now this is dodging the issue and if you are paying attention this will not divert you.  If Mormons were to only go by what the Standard Works teach than Mormonism would crumble in a heart beat.  Most of what Mormons believe comes outside of what the Standard Works teach.  The issue is:  "Is what Joseph Smith said true or not?  Is what Brigham Young taught true or not?"  We are to examine doctrines by what people teach, and that includes what various Mormon leaders have taught.
