Committee on Bible Translation

HOW 'CBT' CAME TO BE
During the 1950s, there was concern for the translation of the Bible by scholars fully committed to the verbal inspiration of the Scriptures and the full authority of God's infallible Word. To this end, committees had been appointed by both the National Association of Evangelicals and the Christian Reformed Church.

These committees, made up of 30 conservative evangelical scholars met together in August, 1965, in Palos Heights, Illinois. There, two historic decisions were made that would push the New International Version (NIV) down the road from dream to reality.

First, though they had no idea how to fund the project, the conferees had decided the following: It is the sense of this assembly that the preparation of a contemporary English translation of the Bible should be undertaken as a collegiate endeavor of evangelical scholars.

Second, during the conference they voted to appoint a Committee of Fifteen to replace the Joint Committee. Its members were charged with devising a plan for making the new translation and then putting that plan into motion.

Throughout the fall of 1965 and the spring of 1966 the Committee of Fifteen filled fourteen of its fifteen mandated positions and adopted a new namethe Committee on Bible Translation, or CBT.

CBT wanted to bring into English the meaning of Scripture as it was intended by the original writers. Their goal was a clear and accurate translation without the doctrinal baggage of any single denomination or group. They agreed that those who worked on the translation must believe in the plenary inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture.

Furthermore, CBT adopted the following evangelical theological statement:

In harmony with the expressed objective of the translation it seems desirable that each person engaged in the work of translation should be clearly on record as to his beliefs. Everyone is to subscribe to the following doctrinal statement (or to a similar statement expressing an equally high view of Scripture): "The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written, and is therefore inerrant in the autographs."

NEW 'CBT' MEMBERS
When someone dies or retires creating a vacancy on the CBT, we discuss possible candidates from several angles. We are interested in their academic competence and scholarship, of course. But, they also must be able to translate from Hebrew and Aramaic (of the Old Testament) and Greek (of the New Testament) into English. They need to be able to subscribe to our evangelical theological statement, including a belief in and commitment to the divine inspiration, infallibility and authority of the Bible as what it claims to be, namely the Word of God.

Such individuals also need to be able to work well, harmoniously and smoothly in committees. While they may be qualified scholars, they may not necessarily work well on committees. After discussing possible candidates and looking at their qualifications, we will then decide on one or two. It requires a 2/3 vote for someone to be invited to membership on CBT there is currently one vacancy.
