What Does The Word "Monotheism"
Mean?
The question is asked,
"What does Monotheism mean?" This is question that has an easy answer, but
within the definition many people have different views on theological issues
concerning it. Mono means "one", and Theism
means "belief in God, god, or gods." So when you have both
combined the meaning is, "the belief in the one God." The online
dictionary says, "The doctrine or belief that there is but one God."
The Bible teaches there
is only one God
-
Isaiah 43:10 teaches
there is only one God
-
Isaiah 44:6-8 teaches
there is only one God
-
Isaiah 45:18-23 teaches
there is only one God
There are different
groups of people who say they are monotheistic in theology, but they have
different beliefs. Muslims believe they are monotheistic, Jehovah's
Witnesses believe they are monotheistic, Mormons believe they are
monotheistic, Christians believe they are monotheistic, Jews believe they
are monotheistic, etc. However, when compared with theology each of the
groups mentioned will have different ways of explaining what they believe.
Wrong Views on the truth
of one God
-
Muslims believe there is
only one God called Allah. (They reject the Trinity and reject Jesus being
the only begotten of God in the flesh, among other things)
-
Jehovah's Witnesses believe
only the Father is God.
-
Mormons believe that there
is only one God of this world, that is the Father.
-
Jews believe there is only
one God but reject the revelation of the unity of God. (They also reject
Jesus as being the Messiah to come)
True Monotheist's
-
Muslims would be true
Monotheist's. They believe only in Allah as being the only true God.
Even though they are Monotheist's in belief they do not have the same God
of the Bible, therefore they are deceived and lost without the truth of
what the Scriptures teach.
-
Jews would be true
Monotheist's. They hold to the one God of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Even though they are Monotheist's in belief they are lost being without
the Messiah, unless they repent and turn to the Lord Jesus.
-
Christians would be true
Monotheist's. They hold to the one God of the Bible revealed through
three distinct persons.
False Monotheist's
-
Jehovah's Witnesses are not
true Monotheist's because they believe the Father is a God and Jesus is a
God, therefore they are polytheist's because they follow two Gods.
-
Mormons are not true
Monotheist's because they believe the Father is a God, Jesus is a God, the
Holy Spirit is a God, all three being three Gods. This is
polytheism, the beliefs of many Gods. Mormons also believe that
before the God of the Bible there are many Gods and exist in other worlds.
Mormons also believe that men can become Gods today and have their own
worlds.
-
Oneness Pentecostals are
not true Monotheist's because they misrepresent the God of the Bible.
They teach there is one God who has different "manifestations"
where He was the Father in creation, the Son in redemption, and the Holy
Spirit in reconciliation.
Monotheism is what the Scriptures teach but many are still lost in
deceptions. True Monotheism is knowing the God of the Bible revealed
in three distinct personages. For further information on this read
